A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
