The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show nears, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
